Venice June 2013

Here is a selection of photos from our trip to Venice. I am a 'first-timer' Blogger so you will have to excuse any mistakes as I get to grips with this technology.

                                  Examples of smaller 'street' canals.
Despite having a reputation for being 'smelly', we did not find it so, even in temperatures of around 35degrees. We did find it very busy everywhere. We found the Vaporetto (water taxis) an excellent way of seeing a lot in a short time.

                                            A rather unexpected shop!

                                                              Piazza San Marco

                                                    Campanile.

                                                              Basilica of San Marco.

                                              Palazzo Ducole   (Doges Palace)

                               Venetian masks (cheaper) street stall.

Venetian masks (expensive) - shop window.

                                       Gondalas for the tourists.

This is how all deliveries for the shops, offices and houses is transported.                                         There are no vehicles at all on the island.

Ponte di Rialto. One of only 4 pedestrian bridges across the whole of the Grand Canal.

These next photos were taken from a Water Taxi which we went on, on the Grand Canal.
Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore (Island of St Georgio)

                                                                            Venetian Palace.

Rialto Bridge - busy waterway! The yellow and white 'buildings' on                                            the water front are water taxi stops.

Ca d'Oro                      How many times must this flood!!!
A rather large ocean liner ( Ruby Princess) leaving Venice.

Basilica di S. Maria della Salute.

This next group of photos were taken on the Island of Burano (about 40 mins by water taxi away from Venice). As you will see there were some very colourful houses, and once again the island is serviced only by boats on the canals.

Deliveries - from boat to barrow to building!

Man hiding his head and keeping his legs cool!

The house I am standing in front of is for sale - any offers??

                                                                    Floating shop.

...and yes - the spire is leaning!

The only large garden we saw on the island- most plants were in pots.

We were grateful for these fountains (spring water)to fill our water bottles.

This last group of 3 photos were taken on the island of Murano (about 20 mins by boat from Venice) which produces a lot of Venetian glass. Still only serviced by canals but not as colourful as Burano.

Right folks. That is my first posting on my Blog!
